FRESHMAN ACADEMIC ENGLISH
Students read a variety of fiction and nonfiction works over the course of the year. The texts will be appropriate for those at or approaching grade level as readers. Students receive direct instruction on writing essays. In addition to the structure of the essay, they will work on how to support their claims and connect their ideas through the use of varied transitions.
FRESHMAN HONORS ENGLISH
Students in honors also read a variety of fiction and nonfiction works. They generally read six or more longer works during the year, and they read more poetry than students in academic. The texts themselves are often more challenging (e.g. The Odyssey). Students prepared for honors are reading at the 10th grade level or beyond when entering high school.
