High School District 230 is continually looking for new ways to enhance student opportunities for learning. This summer the district is expanding its "blended" learning courses in English, Math and Social Studies. The blended classes will be offered in addition to traditional summer school offerings.
Blended learning is a "blend" of face-to-face instruction and online instruction using the districts' learning management system, Canvas.
Director of Curriculum
Stacey Gonzales, explains "We have heard from students that they want to be able to take courses over the summer but need more flexibility. Some participate in band, athletics or even have jobs and vacation plans, yet they want to be able to accelerate their learning or make room for additional courses during the school year. We also know that when students go to college, using online learning has become the norm for many courses. We want our students to be prepared when they leave our schools both academically and with the skills to learn in the college setting."
Blended learning allows students a flexible learning delivery while still taught by a highly qualified D230 teacher and maintains the rigor our D230 students are accustomed to receiving.
Jim Mattera has taught a blended learning American Government course over the past few summers and has had great success.
Blended classes offer a unique opportunity for students to tackle a rigorous curriculum at a pace that is most effect for their ability and learning styles. It is the most effective way of differentiating a classroom I have experienced. Blended learning allows us, as teachers, to leverage technology to individualize learning and scaffold a curriculum in a way that allows us to meet the academic needs of more students than any other academic approach I have used or studied. The individualized focus holds students accountable as learners in a way that is impossible in a traditional classroom setting. There are more opportunities to assess each students understanding of content and skill level because of the use of technology and the unique scheduling opportunities. Because of the freedom of the blended scheduling model, we can spend more time working one on one with students then we every could in a traditional classroom. The face to face aspect of the blended model also provides an opportunity for greater support than a student can receive in a traditional online model.
